A Heartfelt Journey to Reading Success

As a homeschooling mom, I've experienced the joys and challenges of teaching my daughters to read. From the very beginning, I knew fostering a love of reading was crucial. With my first two girls, things flowed smoothly. I used a simple and effective phonics program, and they both picked up reading skills with ease. We had story time every day, building that wonderful bond over books, and I thought I had this phonics thing all figured out.

But then came my third child, and everything changed. The same methods that worked so beautifully with her sisters led to frustration, and there were more tears than triumphs. I couldn’t understand it—she loved stories when I read to her, so why wasn't phonics clicking?

I started questioning my approach, feeling the weight of guilt that maybe I wasn’t doing enough. But deep down, I knew every child is different. The one-size-fits-all method wasn’t going to work this time.

Then, last summer, I met two teachers online who introduced me to the Homegrown Phonics program. It was summer, so I didn’t dive right in, but as I started incorporating bits and pieces of the lessons, I could see her confidence growing. By fall, we fully embraced the curriculum, and that’s when I watched my struggling reader finally start to make real progress. We were both elated! The tears and frustration turned into moments of joy as each new sound and word clicked into place. It was like watching a puzzle finally come together—everything started to make sense for her.

If you're reading this and have a struggling reader, I understand how hard it can be to admit that what worked before isn't working now. But I can’t emphasize enough how life-changing it was to reach out for help and find this program. The multisensory approach they use is different, and that’s what makes it so effective. Every child learns differently, and Homegrown Phonics addresses that with its flexible, gentle, and hands-on approach.
